SAMPLES VIDEOS FROM THE FIDELITY PLATFORM
Motivational Interviewing Training Videos

The interviews on this page are unrehearsed candid conversations (not clinical sessions or role-plays) with Dr. William R. (Bill) Miller to demonstrate some specific aspects of motivational interviewing as described in the 2023 4th edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow by Miller and Rollnick. Staff from The Change Companies volunteered to talk about specific topics in their own lives. Corresponding interview transcripts are provided to highlight motivational interviewing skills featured in each conversation.

If you enjoyed these sample videos, we encourage you to access our complete motivational interviewing library on the Fidelity Platform—an online, self-paced training hub designed to upskill facilitators through a variety of learning modalities.

SAMPLE VIDEO 3
DR. MILLER & GRANT

The speaker's topic was "Something I have been encouraged to change but haven't, and I'm not sure if I even want to or will." When there seems to be no change talk to evoke, the interviewer listens well to sustain talk to discern whether there is ambivalence as the pendulum reaches a zenith.

ADDITIONAL DEMONSTRATION VIDEOS

These demonstrations of motivational interviewing were filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Interviews 1-10 were recorded in 2012 after the 3rd edition of Motivational Interviewing was published. Interviews 11 and 12 are the first recorded demonstrations of MI from 1989, even before Drs. Miller and Rollnick met and published the first edition of their text in 1991. Finally, interviews 13-14 were retained from an early series of video demonstrations recorded in 1998.

All videos were designed to help viewers understand the counseling style of MI and to demonstrate one or more of its component processes of engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning. The content of these demonstrations remains consistent with and faithful to the 4th edition of Motivational Interviewing (2023). We are pleased to make these interviews freely available for streaming, recognizing that they are insufficient in themselves to help professionals develop competence in the practice of this method.
