When there is addiction, there is trauma. Trauma often precedes and drives addiction, and addiction causes trauma. Together, addiction and trauma create a vicious cycle where each one fuels the other. To help our patients, we need to provide concurrent trauma and addictions treatment. We need to move beyond trauma-informed care to trauma-integrated addictions treatment. This talk provides an overview of the key principles and practices of trauma-integrated addictions treatment.
